What is a double chin?
A double chin is a deformation below the chin caused by fat deposits or sagging tissue. In many cases, this is a side effect of being overweight. Excess fat pads appear all over the body, including on the chin.
Unfortunately, the double chin often remains after weight loss and even if the fat deposits dissolve, excess skin often remains due to prolonged stretching and does not completely disappear. The same happens with the natural ageing process of the skin, which unfortunately also causes it to sag on the chin.
Even people of normal weight are not immune to a double chin. In these cases, however, the fat deposits are usually genetic. In principle, a double chin can occur in women and men at any age and can vary in severity.
Methods
What are the options for removing a double chin?
Modern cosmetic surgery offers various options for removing an annoying double chin and optimizing the chin area according to your wishes. These differ in their effect and sustainability and have specific advantages.
Hyaluron injection
If the double chin is only to be concealed, it is possible to inject hyaluronic acid into the chin in a targeted manner. This can give the sagging skin areas more elasticity and volume again. However, this method does not reduce fatty tissue, but only contours the chin line more clearly. The hyaluronic acid treatment is suitable for slightly sagging skin without a lot of fat.
Injection lipolysis (“fat-away injection”)
Injection lipolysis is still relatively new. It is suitable for dissolving fat deposits under the chin in a targeted manner. This usually requires 2-4 sessions in our practice in Frankfurt, during which the fat is gradually removed. This gentle method is suitable for removing small to medium-sized fat deposits under the chin and can be combined with hyaluronic acid injections if required.
Liposuction
The most common treatment option is liposuction. In this procedure, the fatty tissue is first loosened and then suctioned out. Fat cells cannot grow back, so the result of this method (assuming a stable weight) is permanent. Liposuction is therefore also suitable for removing a pronounced double chin.
Endolift®
Endolift® is a minimally invasive procedure that uses laser technology to act on both the fat cells and the skin. The special wavelength of the laser guided under the skin liquefies small fat deposits and tightens the skin at the same time and is therefore very suitable for the effective treatment of a double chin.
Neck lift
A classic neck lift (also known as a neck lift) is a surgical procedure in which a large amount of excess skin is removed from the neck and the muscles are tightened. If necessary, the skin tightening is combined with liposuction to achieve the desired result.
Facelift with neck lift
The facelift aims to achieve a comprehensive visual rejuvenation of the face and neck and usually consists of a combination of skin tightening and muscle tightening and, if necessary, liposuction in various areas of the face and neck.

- What methods are there to remove a double chin?

- When does double chin removal make sense?
Treatment is always advisable if stubborn fat deposits have formed under the chin or the skin is visibly sagging. - Can a double chin be prevented?

- Is a double chin treatment painful?
No, the treatment is usually carried out under local anesthesia so that there is hardly any pain. Depending on the procedure, sometimes no anesthesia is required at all (e.g. cryolipolysis) or local anesthesia using an anesthetic cream is sufficient (e.g. hyaluronic acid injections). In some cases, we perform the treatment in twilight sleep or under general anesthesia (e.g. facelift). Wound pain can occur after surgical procedures, but this can be easily treated with standard painkillers.
- Will visible scars remain after the double chin treatment?
It depends on the method. Hyaluronic acid injections, fat-away injections and cryolipolysis leave no visible scars on the chin/face, while thread lifts and liposuction only leave small puncture marks or tiny incisions that usually heal well and are no longer visible later. With a neck lift or a facelift with neck lift, however, scars remain, but these are usually in the most inconspicuous places possible.
- Can a double chin reappear after removal?
This depends on the cause and the treatment method. With liposuction, the fat cells are permanently removed and cannot form again. However, if you gain weight again, the remaining fat cells can enlarge again, including under the chin. The skin under the chin can also become flabbier with age and cause a “new” double chin to develop. However, this risk is significantly lower after treatment than without treatment.
- Can double chin removal be combined with other treatments?
Yes, it often makes sense to combine several methods in order to achieve a harmonious overall appearance. For example, liposuction can be supplemented with skin tightening or a facelift.
