Introduction

What is an eyelid lift?

An eyelid lift (medical term: blepharoplasty) is a procedure often performed in plastic and aesthetic surgery in which excess skin, fat and muscle tissue are removed from the eyelids. The aim of the operation, also known as an eyelid lift or simply eyelid surgery, is to give the eye area a fresher and more awake appearance.

What are the reasons for an eyelid lift?

The majority of patients come to us with the desire for an eyelid lift for aesthetic reasons. Drooping eyelids and/or bags under the eyes, which are caused by genetics, the ageing process or external influences such as frequent sunbathing, often make patients look more tired and older than they actually are. Accordingly, these patients have a great desire for a visual change that better suits them and their inner feelings.

It is less common for an eyelid lift to be performed for medical reasons. This is the case, for example, if the field of vision is restricted by severely drooping upper eyelids or bags under the eyes or if eyelid closure is impaired. For both aesthetic and medical reasons, plastic and aesthetic surgery with an eyelid lift can help to reduce discomfort and make the eye area look more alert and friendly again.

Methods

What methods does Dr. Nichlos use for eyelid correction?

There are basically two types of eyelid lift: Upper eyelid lift and lower eyelid lift. Dr. Nichlos performs both types of eyelid surgery in the operating rooms of the Berger Klinik individually or in combination if required.

The most common eyelid correction in Frankfurt is the tightening of the upper eyelid. It is used when the upper eyelid skin is sagging and therefore drooping, causing visual problems for patients or making them unhappy with their appearance. For the correction, Dr. Nichlos makes a very fine incision in the natural eyelid crease and removes excess skin and, if necessary, muscle and fatty tissue from the upper eyelid. In this way, drooping eyelids can be corrected effectively and permanently.

If patients suffer from pronounced bags under the eyes or sagging eyelid skin that forms wrinkles, a tightening of the lower eyelid is an option. During this procedure, Dr. Nichlos removes excess skin and tightens the eye ring muscle. In certain cases, eyelid correction can also be performed “from the inside” (transconjunctival tightening). The advantage of this is that there are no visible scars.

Both the upper and lower eyelid correction ensure a more alert and open look, making the whole face appear fresher and younger.

Good to know: In some cases, a combination with an eyebrow lift (eyebrow lift/eyebrow lift) is also useful. This is the case, for example, if the eyebrows have drooped so much that they visually reduce the eye area or obstruct vision.

Preparation

What happens before the eyelid lift?

Before the eyelid lift, you can tell Dr. Nichlos in a relaxed atmosphere what exactly bothers you about your eye area and what result you would like to achieve with the eyelid lift. The specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery will advise you whether the desired changes are more likely to be achieved with a tightening of the upper or lower eyelid or whether a combination of both may be the better choice for you.

During the consultation, Dr. Nichlos can also show you before and after pictures of successfully performed corrections so that you can get a better idea of the surgical options and, of course, the surgeon’s experience.

It is important that you know the exact treatment procedure and what to look out for before and after. Dr. Nichlos will therefore explain the exact procedure to you and inform you about possible risks and complications. An ophthalmological examination may be necessary before the eyelid correction, but we will explain this to you during your consultation.

Please also inform us at the appointment about any pre-existing medical conditions and medication that you take regularly. It may be necessary to temporarily discontinue these (e.g. those with a blood-thinning effect) in consultation with Dr. Nichlos.

Procedure

Eyelid lift Frankfurt: How does the operation work?

An eyelid lift is usually performed on an outpatient basis at the Berger Klinik in Frankfurt under local anesthesia. Depending on the type of eyelid lift, Dr. Nichlos makes fine incisions on the upper or lower eyelid. The incision follows the anatomical folds so that the fine scars are not visible later and therefore do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about an eyelid lift.

Once the skin incisions have been made, the specialist carefully separates the epidermis from the subcutaneous tissue and muscles and removes the excess skin. If necessary, he will also remove or redistribute excess fatty tissue as part of the eyelid lift in Frankfurt. At the end of the procedure, the wound is sutured with a very thin thread.

Aftercare

What happens after the eyelid lift in Frankfurt?

Immediately after the eyelid lift, you can carefully cool the area around your eyes (cooling pad or cooling goggles) so that swelling subsides more quickly. Avoid straining, rubbing or squeezing your eyes. If possible, avoid wearing eye make-up for the first 10 to 14 days after the operation so that no fine particles get into the still fresh wound. You should also avoid using creams and ointments for the first two weeks after your eyelid correction.

Keep your head as high as possible for the first few days and allow yourself to rest. Avoid sport and other physical exertion for at least 2 weeks and protect your eyes well from UV radiation (direct sunlight, solarium) during this time. It is best to wear good sunglasses with high UV protection when outdoors.

Risks

What are the risks of an eyelid lift?

An eyelid lift performed by an experienced plastic and aesthetic surgeon is generally considered a low-risk procedure. However, as with any surgery, there is a general risk of redness, swelling, bleeding, wound healing disorders and infections as well as temporary numbness in the surgical area.

In addition, in rare cases, dryness of the eyes, a feeling of tension or tightness when blinking and difficulty closing the eyelids may occur after eyelid correction. These side effects are also usually temporary and subside during the healing process.

Very rarely, complications such as undesirable scarring, excessive tightening of the eyelid skin (overcorrection) or overstimulation of the tear ducts occur after an eyelid lift, which can lead to frequent tearing or increased dryness of the eyes. However, the risk of these complications can be reduced to a minimum by choosing an experienced surgeon such as Dr. Nichlos and following the post-operative instructions.
