There are pockets of fat that defy even the strictest discipline and exercise and simply refuse to disappear. Typical examples include small accumulations of fat on the chin and neck, hips, buttocks, or knees. This is understandably frustrating, but it’s not your fault. Some fat cells are simply resistant to even the most determined attempts to get rid of them.
The most effective solution for permanently getting rid of these stubborn pockets of fat is classic liposuction. However, this has one disadvantage: once the fat has been removed, loose skin sometimes remains, requiring additional tightening surgery.
At my practice in Frankfurt am Main, I close this gap with the innovative Leonardo® laser. The state-of-the-art Dual 45 laser from biolitec allows me to tighten and smooth the skin immediately after the procedure. This not only achieves a slimmer silhouette, but also an overall firm and harmonious result that would not be possible with liposuction alone.
At a glance: The advantages of the Leonardo® laser
- Targeted skin tightening immediately after liposuction
- Stimulation of collagen production for long-term firmer tissue
- Ideal for soft skin (e.g., on the upper arms and inner thighs)
- Gentle application with reduced risk of bruising
- Minimally invasive alternative to major tightening surgery
What is the Leonardo® laser and how does it work?
The Leonardo® laser is an innovation in laser technology and was developed by the German manufacturer biolitec specifically for minimally invasive body contouring using lipolysis. However, in my practice, I do not primarily use it to remove fat—I do that more efficiently and precisely with liposuction. I use the laser to optimize the results after liposuction.
The special feature of the Leonardo® Dual-45 laser is its two wavelengths (980 nm and 1470 nm). I insert the thin light-conducting fiber into the tissue immediately after suction. The 1470 nm wavelength generates heat, which smooths the remaining fat cells and—this is the crucial effect here—stimulates collagen formation deep in the skin. This leads to immediately visible tightening in the areas where we have previously removed volume and, in the long term, to improved elasticity.
The 980 nm wavelength of the laser simultaneously causes coagulation (hemostasis). For you, this means that the procedure is virtually bloodless and there is significantly less bruising and swelling after the treatment than with pure liposuction.

Areas of application: Where the Leonardo® laser helps with tightening
I always recommend the Leonardo® diode laser system to my patients when their skin quality is not optimal or when we are working on areas that are particularly prone to sagging.
Body contouring
Treatment with the Leonardo® Laser is particularly valuable in areas where the skin is very thin and quickly becomes saggy or dimpled after liposuction. The positive effects of laser tightening after liposuction are particularly evident in the following areas:
- Stomach
- Back (“bra rolls”)
- Hips (“love handles”)
- Upper arms (“bat wings”)
- Inner thighs
- Knee area (“knee fat”)
Face and neck (definition)
Sensitive areas of the body such as the face also benefit from skin tightening with the Leonardo® laser. Here, the innovative device can be used for the following purposes, for example:
- Skin tightening after double chin treatment
- Smoothing of the jawline and “jowls”
- Skin tightening on the neck (“turkey neck”)
What else can the Leonardo® laser do?
In addition to the applications mentioned above, the laser is suitable for a variety of other treatments, such as skin tightening for cellulite. The laser can also be used to remove lipomas (benign fatty tumors) or treat unsightly veins. However, I do not offer the latter treatment at my practice in Frankfurt.
Limitations of treatment: What the laser is not suitable for
As a specialist, it is my duty to tell you not only what is possible with the Leonardo® laser, but also where its limitations lie. Specifically, there are two scenarios here:
Extreme excess skin after significant weight loss
If you have lost 30 kilograms or more, you will inevitably be left with a large amount of excess skin, usually in the form of a skin apron on the lower abdomen. The problem is that although the laser tightens the skin, it cannot make half a square meter of skin disappear. In this case, a tightening operation (e.g., abdominoplasty or upper arm lift) is the only sensible solution. I can use the Leonardo® laser during the procedure to complement the modeling of the edges.
Replacement for traditional liposuction
The Leonardo® laser is generally suitable for laser lipolysis. It is therefore capable of melting fat tissue to a limited extent. However, in my practice, I do not use the laser as the sole method of fat removal. Liposuction is more efficient and, for me as a specialist, easier to control. However, I like to combine the methods to achieve the best possible results for you.
Step by step: How does the combined treatment of suction and laser tightening work?
To give you a better idea of the procedure, I will explain it using the example of upper arm treatment. I like to treat so-called “bat wings” in my practice with the Leonardo® laser, as it achieves very attractive results.
1. Marking the treatment area
Before you lie down on the operating table, I will mark the areas to be treated on your upper arms. I deliberately do this while you are standing so that I can see how the tissue falls in your natural posture and ensure a harmonious result after liposuction.
2. Injection of the tumescent solution
Once you are lying down, you will be given a general anesthetic for greater comfort (depending on the procedure) or we will put you into a twilight sleep. I will then inject a tumescent solution into your upper arms.
3. Liposuction
Through tiny incisions, I insert a cannula into the tissue of your upper arms and suction out the fat that has already been loosened by the tumescent solution. In doing so, I also sculpt the shape.
4. Skin tightening with the Leonardo® Dual 45 laser
Now it’s time to use the Leonardo® laser. I insert the ultra-thin glass fiber into the same access points. I then move it in a fan-shaped pattern under the skin. The heat tightens the connective tissue (“shrinking effect”), making the skin immediately firmer. In addition, heating the subcutaneous connective tissue activates the cells of the connective tissue and thus stimulates collagen production, which provides a lasting tightening effect.
5. Treating the puncture sites and applying compression
Finally, I close the incisions with a small plaster. Sewing is often not necessary. We then fit you with compression garments. These are important to ensure that the skin and tissue heal smoothly and that the new shape of your arm stabilizes. Depending on the extent of the surgery, a one-day stay in the clinic may be necessary. You can then return home.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about
the Leonardo® laser
- What is the Leonardo® laser?
The Leonardo® Laser is a medical diode laser (Dual-45 from biolitec) that is used for skin tightening and tissue optimization. It is particularly effective as a supplement after liposuction.
- What is the Leonardo® laser used for?
The laser is primarily used for skin tightening after liposuction. It can also be used to treat cellulite, sagging skin, double chin, or for contour definition.
- How does the Leonardo® laser work?
The laser operates at two wavelengths (980 nm and 1470 nm). These generate targeted heat in the subcutaneous tissue, stimulate collagen production, and tighten the skin from within.
- Is the Leonardo® laser used without liposuction?
In principle, laser lipolysis is possible, but in practice, the Leonardo® laser is usually used in addition to liposuction to visibly improve the results.
- Which areas of the body is the Leonardo® laser suitable for?
Suitable areas include the stomach, hips, back, upper arms, inner thighs, knees, face, neck, and double chin.
- Is treatment with the Leonardo® laser painful?
No. The treatment is performed under general anesthesia or twilight sedation. After the procedure, many patients even report less pain and bruising than with pure liposuction.
- How quickly will you see results after treatment?
Initial tightening is often visible immediately. The final result improves over several weeks as collagen formation continues to be stimulated.
- Will there be any scars after treatment?
No. The laser is inserted through the same small incisions as the suction cannulas. There are no additional incisions or scars.
- Who is the Leonardo® laser not suitable for?
In cases of significant excess skin, e.g., after massive weight loss, laser treatment is not sufficient. In such cases, traditional tightening surgery is necessary.
- What are the advantages of the Leonardo® laser over pure liposuction?
The laser provides additional skin tightening, less bruising, less swelling, and an overall more harmonious body contouring result.
